Det nye mini-album “Loopy & Esther” fra Ida Wenøe & Samantha Whates er udsprunget af en kanotur, skrevet i Kbh. hos Wenøe, og indspillet i sangskrivernes hjemmestudier i henholdsvis Margate og Kbh.

Med udgangspunkt i et kreativt samarbejde, som gennem flere år er blevet finpudset på scenen og nedfældet på den fælles EP “Turn” fra 2022, har Samantha Whates og Ida Wenøe endnu en gang skabt, skrevet og produceret sammen.
Resultatet er mini-albummet Loopy & Esther – en legesyg collage af lyde og indtryk, magi, kærlighed og venskab, natur og supermåner. Alt sammen præget af en rød tråd af tab, forandring og de mange snoede stier vores liv kan tage.
Som mange af de bedste ting i livet blev musikken inspireret af en kanotur i Danmark. Navngivet efter de gule undulater, de begge havde som børn, er Loopy & Esther en samling af sange og vignetter inspireret af cykliske årstider, livets kredsløb og magiske symboler, hvor reallyde fra kanoturen og sange skrevet i fællesskab i Idas hjem i København fletter sig ind i hinanden til en meget fin helhed.
Du træder ind i en verden, hvor røgen fra bålet hænger i luften, og vinden suser i træerne. Albummet er produceret både i fællesskab og på lang afstand i deres hjemmestudier i hhv. København og Margate.
Loopy & Esther udkommer digitalt d. 15. november på Songcrafter Music, men allerede 29. oktober holdt Ida og Samantha en release koncert for pladen på Paper Dress Vintage i London, hvor albummet kunne købes på CD. Koncerten var en del af en længere UK tour, som de to netop har spillet sammen.

Ida Wenøe har skabt sit eget musikalske ståsted ved at sammenblande udenlandske forbilleder som Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Bill Callahan, Bedouine, Leonard Cohen, Vashti Bunyan og Beth Gibbons med sine danske rødder, der spænder fra traditionel folkemusik over Højskolesangbogen og komponister som Carl Nielsen og Sebastian til en tydelig inspiration fra engelsk folk.
Siden udgivelsen af debutalbummet “Time of Ghosts” i 2015 har Wenøe spillet hundredvis af koncerter over hele Europa og Nordamerika. Hendes musik har været spillet på bl.a. Danmarks Radio, BBC 6 Music og BBC Radio 4 i England, og KEXP og WXNA i USA.
Ida Wenøe arbejder med en fortættet historiefortælling, hvor hun ofte bruger naturen som inspiration. Stemmen har både nerve og styrke, og hun henter inspiration fra 60’ernes og 70’ernes folk-traditioner, men giver alligevel altid musikken sit helt eget touch. Akkompagnementet er kendetegnet ved subtilt men insisterende guitarspil, flankeret af violin, kontrabas og fløjter, og ikke mindst svævende vokalharmonier.
Efter det meget roste album “The Things We Don’t Know Yet” fra 2019 udkom Idas seneste album “Undersea” i 2023 til flotte internationale anmeldelser og airplay på BBC og mange mindre radiostationer over hele verden. Udgivelsen er blevet fulgt op af koncerter i Sverige og Danmark, og i efteråret 2024 en længere tour i England og Wales.

Join us for a unique, musical nature bimble, in the splendid company of Scottish-Danish duo, Whates and Wenøe.
Expanding on a creative collaboration honed on stage and refined in their 2022 Turn EP, Samantha Whates and Ida Wenøe have again joined forces to create, write and produce together. The result is Loopy & Esther – a deft collage of impressions, magic, love and friendship, nature and supermoons, haunted by the throughline of loss, of change, the many meandering pathways our lives become.Like many of the best things in life, the LP was inspired by a canoe trip in Denmark.
Named after their matching yellow pet birds the pair had as children, Loopy & Esther is a collection of songs and vignettes inspired by cycling seasons, circles of life and symbols of magic, using sounds from their field trip and songs written together at Ida’s home in Copenhagen. You’ll discover a world where bonfires scent the breeze and wind moves the trees. Produced together and long distance between Copenhagen and Margate in their home studios, producing a musical journey populated by lily pads, bulrushes, prepared piano, the closest harmonies, birds and frogs.

‘Lily Pad Blues’. The first teaser released from the album was ‘Lily Pad Blues’ composed by Whates: drunken flute and off kilter vocals give the feeling of summer descending into autumn and a sinister character just off screen waiting to pounce and unbalance the lily pad. A visual animated collaboration with Hidy Thing.
‘Bless the Telephone’, a tender and intimate cover of the Labi Siffre tune, originally released in 1971. “We wanted to make a cover of this beautiful pure song as it creates such an interesting parallel to our relationships with our phones in this modern world and having a long distance friendship our phones are such a big part of keeping our connection. We used voice notes we have sent each other from the time period of Whates’s father passing to add cinematic atmosphere and real life to this live recording made using prepared piano in Ida’s home.”
Single: ‘Warning Song’ – Written in the light of a super full moon with the sound of bonfire crackles for soundtrack this mysterious song takes heed of the warnings from the supernatural. Life cycles and Tarot cards at its core.
